If there is one thing I repeat all the time to my students, it’s this: small, consistent practice beats long, occasional study every single time.

You don’t need to spend hours learning French. You don’t need perfect grammar.

You don’t even need to understand everything you hear or read.

What matters most is showing up a little bit every day.

Daily practice helps you:

  • get used to the rhythm and music of the language,

  • learn expressions naturally,

  • feel less afraid when you speak,

  • and slowly build a habit that becomes part of your everyday life.

And honestly, this is exactly how people become confident.

Not by memorising endless rules but by using the language regularly in enjoyable ways.

Of course, the BEST daily practice is speaking.

Reading, watching films, listening to podcasts… all of that is great, but nothing will help you progress faster than talking with real people.

Speaking forces your brain to react, search for words, make mistakes, try again and that’s where real learning happens.

This is why my online French conversation classes are designed specifically for expats and busy learners. You get:

  • guided conversations,

  • personalised and live corrections,

  • a supportive group of learners who go through the same challenges as you.

If you want to boost your confidence and finally feel comfortable speaking French in everyday situations, joining an online French conversation class is simply the most effective step you can take.

But while you wait for your next class or if you want extra immersion, here are six resources you can use to practise French on your own. They’re fun, accessible, and perfectly adapted for A2–B1 learners.

2 Easy books for A2–B1 students

1- La liste de mes envies – Grégoire Delacourt

La liste de mes envies is a touching and very accessible novel for French learners.

The story follows Jocelyne, a simple woman who runs a small shop in northern France. One day, she wins a huge lottery prize… but hesitates to claim it. This decision makes her reflect on what truly matters in life: love, family, simplicity, and all the little joys of everyday life.

The writing is clear, the chapters are short, and the vocabulary is easy to understand, making it perfect for A2–B1 learners. The novel also encourages readers to think about their own dreams and what really makes them happy all while enjoying beautiful French storytelling.

2. La Tresse – Laetitia Colombani

La Tresse (The Braid) is an inspiring and easy-to-read novel for French learners. The story follows three women from different parts of the world — India, Sicily, and Canada — whose lives are very different but connected by courage, determination, and the fight for independence.

It explores important themes such as women’s empowerment, family, and the strength to change one’s life, all while telling a touching and engaging story.

2 Films to improve your listening skills

A very important tip: always watch with French subtitles, not English.

Why?

Because English subtitles make your brain switch languages all the time. French subtitles help you connect what you hear with what you read and this is incredibly effective for French listening skills.

1. Intouchables

A film full of heart, humour, and authentic spoken French. The dialogue is natural and a bit fast, but with subtitles, you’ll catch a lot of new expressions used in daily conversations.

2. Le Fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain

A magical, poetic film with beautiful visuals and a rich atmosphere. The vocabulary is accessible, and the story is easy to follow even if you miss some sentences. A perfect film to enjoy a relaxing French evening.

1. Lupin

This modern adaptation of the Arsène Lupin stories became a worldwide hit and it’s perfect for learners. The episodes are short, the plot is clear, and Omar Sy’s acting brings a lot of humour and charm. Great for learning everyday vocabulary and fast dialogues.
